When a career path is handed down over three generations, you know it’s not a job. It’s a vocation. My grandfather and my father both worked tirelessly as State Farm Agents. I saw how they interacted with their customers because so many of them were neighbors and friends. They were kind, they were supportive, and they worked hard—and they never missed an important family event. My dad attended our soccer games, softball games, or even hot dog day at the elementary school. It stuck with me.

Even when I was in college at the University of Vermont, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. I always wanted to be a State Farm Agent. My mom even has a picture that I drew in kindergarten and I dressed as a State Farm Agent. I never thought of doing anything else. The bottom line is that I need to do something meaningful, something that is of service to others. To do this, I needed to follow in the footsteps of my family.

And these are big footsteps to fill! I started my journey working at my dad’s agency and learned the business. It wasn’t glamorous (especially when the janitor called out), but I watched and learned. I saw how my grandfather and father treated their customers like family. They provided them with options and transparency. They held their hands through tragedy. They celebrated milestones. They made a positive impact. I have made it my life’s work to do the same.

On January 1, 2016 I proudly took my place as a Start Farm Agent. On paper I offer my customers options in auto, home, and life insurance policies in New Jersey. But in the grand scheme of things, I know I do so much more. I listen, collaborate, and help people craft and secure their dreams. That may sound far-fetched, but I really do wake up each morning filled with this purpose.

My work is incredibly meaningful in that I help people preserve their family’s future. We all work to provide comfort and security for our families, but the unpredictability of life can sweep that all away in a second. I take seriously my role in tempering tragedy with preparedness. As a wife and mother, I know how precious that kind of safety net can be.
